'He always showed a little bit of class' - Paddington given 40-1 quote for Derby
Thursday: Curragh
Aidan O'Brien warmed up for British Champions Day in the best possible way with an impressive Curragh treble across the three races he was represented in on the card.
Paddington, a €420,000 yearling by Siyouni, earned a 40-1 quote with Paddy Power for next year's Derby after running out a smart winner of the opening 7f juvenile maiden under Seamie Heffernan.
A ready five-length strike as 16-5 favourite demonstrated a significant step forward from the colt's debut effort at Ascot last month when beaten eight lengths in fifth.
O'Brien said: "We were disappointed with him at Ascot – he was very green – but we gave him time and he came back. He always showed a little bit of class and we're delighted with that.
"I don't know if he'll run again this season, there's probably not anywhere for him. He could start in a Guineas or Derby trial next year, possibly a Guineas trial and we'll see then."
Heffernan shortly made it a double for Ballydoyle when speedy two-year-old Hispanic blitzed his rivals in the 5f maiden by eight lengths - a margin understood to be the biggest of any O'Brien-trained winner in a 5f maiden.
O'Brien said of the 3-1 winner: "He was very green on his first start and even greener on his second run. We thought maybe the penny isn't dropping at all so we put a pair of blinkers on him at home and he grew another leg.
"Seamus said he let him go at the two-furlong pole and it was over. It just goes to show you what can happen when a horse is mentally a little bit backward. He's very fast. He showed a lot of speed and then he quickened off that pace."
An excellent day's work for the Rosegreen team was rounded off when unexposed three-year-old Harley Street, the 5-6 favourite, kept on strongly to land the 1m4f maiden under Wayne Lordan.
O'Brien said: "He had a lovely run here [when sixth of 24 runners in a maiden] on his debut. He was very green through the race and really only got going when going past the line the last day.
"Looking at him, he could even get further than a mile and half. He's still babyish and could make a nice four-year-old."
Powell reaches double digits at Curragh for 2022
Jamie Powell's sensational season at the Curragh scaled yet further heights as he partnered a winner on his first ride for Mick Halford aboard the improving Chally Chute in the 1m4f handicap.
It was the polished 7lb claimer's tenth winner at Irish Flat racing headquarters this year, accounting for nearly half of his 21 total winners in 2022.
Halford said: "I'm delighted for Jamie to ride a winner for us - he was very cool on this horse. His dad [Anthony] was a great friend of mine and his grandmother actually taught me to ride.
"I spent a lot of years out in Powells' as a kid. It's great to see the next generation coming along."
