Happy Paul Hanagan enjoys 113-1 treble at scene of horror injury
Two-time champion jockey Paul Hanagan enjoyed a big-priced treble at the track where his career was nearly ended with a serious back injury.
Hanagan fractured his T6 vertebra in a fall on the flat aboard the Richard Fahey-trained Requinto Dawn in February 2020.
However, there were happier memories for the 40-year-old and Fahey as they combined to land the feature Seaton Delaval handicap with 15-8 favourite Hartswood.
Hanagan was full of praise for the toughness of the four-year-old, saying: “He deserved that, he hasn’t got the rub of the green on his last few runs.
“He just showed what a nice horse he is and what a great temperament he has. That horse came to my girths and he just went again. He stays very well”
Fahey and Hanagan’s day improved further as the strong-travelling Shaykhoon surprisingly landed the 7f handicap at odds of 22-1, his first win at the sixth attempt.
Hanagan’s other winner on the card come from a more expected source as odds-on favourite Manhattanville won the 7f novice for trainer Ed Dunlop.
Dead-heat drama
The Mark Johnston-trained Boondoggle and the Marco Botti-trained Sharp Riposte could not be split by the judge after a back-and-forth battle in the 6f novice.
After attempting to make all under Ben Curtis, Boondoggle admirably fought back to retake the lead having being passed by the Luke Morris-ridden Sharp Riposte a furlong out, only for the latter to show similar levels of resolve and force the prize-money to be split.
