Ger Lyons could be on the Classic trail again with classy Cairde Go Deo
Saturday: Navan
Ger Lyons won the Irish Oaks in 2020 with Even So and two years on he could be tempted to have a crack at the same Classic with Cairde Go Deo following her wide-margin win in the feature Irish Stallion Farms EBF Yeats Stakes.
Before then the Munster Oaks at Cork is on the agenda for Cairde Go Deo, who looked a relentless galloper in registering an eight-length victory over 33-1 outsider Hotter Than Hades.
The Listed race was marred by a fatal injury to odds-on favourite Arbutus early in the home straight, and Lyons was quick to acknowledge that unfortunate incident.
The winning trainer said: "I love horses and I don't like seeing that [the injury to Arbutus]."
On the winner, he added: "It was all about the trip with Cairde Go Deo and she loved the ground. We were going to wait for the Munster Oaks, but we took a view that this race was going to cut up at the start of the week and it did.
"We watched the Lingfield Oaks Trial last weekend and part of me thought we left that one behind us. But I'd rather do it at Navan and take it from there. The next step will be the Munster Oaks and time will tell whether she is worth stepping up into the big time."
No spoofing, the Dash is next
Next stop the Dash on Derby day for Only Spoofing.
The evergreen eight-year-old registered win number ten of a 60-race career in the 5f handicap and he will head back to Epsom next month to try to go one better than he did in the Dash 12 months ago when second to Mokaatil.
Winning trainer Kevin Coleman said: "We'll do the same again, go back to Epsom and then go to the Curragh."
Time goes quick
Michael O'Callaghan thinks Harry Time could be a Coventry horse, and Paddy Power introduced him at 20-1 for that after a stylish debut success in the opening maiden.
"I think he could be a Coventry horse – the stiff 6f at Ascot will suit," said O'Callaghan after the 4-1 shot's emphatic victory.
The winning trainer added: "He loved the ground. He's uncomplicated, a good mover and very laid-back. I'm delighted he went and did it the way he did, because if he didn't then the others are no good at home!"
Gamble landed
There was another impressive winning newcomer in the 5f maiden as the Willie McCreery-trained Charlemont stormed up the hill to score by five lengths from the more experienced Gobi Star.
The Starspangledbanner colt, who had been available at 13-2 in the morning, was sent off at 2-1 and those who participated in the plunge didn't have a single bead of sweat on them as he blew the race apart from the two-furlong pole.
McCreery said: "He's a lovely horse, a gorgeous big horse and we just had to take our time with him. He's a Starspangledbanner and acts on better ground, he just loved that. He quickened up the hill well in Navan. It was a lovely start."
First Flat success for Stokes
A first Flat win for Fethard-based trainer Nicky Stokes arrived in the 5f handicap as 9-1 shot Curraheen Princess and Joe Doyle held off the late surge of Amazing Emma.
Stokes has been doing particularly well in point-to-points in the last 12 months, and his wife Anna said: "We've about nine in, we're pre-training a few and have a bit of everything really. It was a great performance from her and I'm absolutely delighted."
