Eydon cut to 20-1 (from 66) for 2,000 Guineas and Derby after Feilden romp
Thursday: bet365 Feilden Stakes (Listed), Newmarket
Eydon has been cut to 20-1 for the 2,000 Guineas and Cazoo Derby (from 66) with Betfair Sportsbook and Paddy Power after springing a surprise in the Listed Feilden Stakes at Newmarket.
In the Mishriff colours of Prince Faisal for Roger Varian and David Egan, Eydon came into the race a maiden after two promising efforts at two and took the step up in class in his stride, drawing three and a quarter lengths clear of 2-1 favourite Masekela.
The win made it a double for Varian, who won the 5f novice with Tajalla, and he said: "We thought he'd run very well. His first run was a lovely run and the second was probably trainer error as we probably ran him when he wasn't quite on song.
"The last six weeks he's done really well and he did a lovely piece of work on the turf five days ago to suggest we weren't tilting at windmills here."
The trainer added the horse was among the biggest he had at home, and said: "He's got a great temperament, if you saw him in the prelims he just ambled around, he's a cool customer. I was worried early on with the slow pace as we were towards the rear but I love how he moved into it and there's a lot to look forward to."
The last Feilden winner to go on to victory at Epsom was Golden Horn, who also won the Irish Champion Stakes and Arc, in 2015.
The homebred is by unheralded sire Olden Times, who won the Feilden Stakes before going on to win the Prix Jean Prat for John Dunlop in 2001, and is the first foal out of Frankel mare Moon Mountain.
