Dream result for Crisfords as Century wins Diomed for a second time
Century Dream gave father-and-son combination Simon and Ed Crisford their biggest success yet as a training partnership in landing the Diomed Stakes at Newbury for a second time with a wind operation clearly having done the trick.
Making all under a canny James Doyle, the six-year-old had too much foot for his younger rivals King Of Comedy and Zaaki to follow up his success in the race in 2018 when run at its usual home, Epsom.
Ed Crisford was clearly thrilled with this Group 3 success, saying: "He's been a really, really great horse for the stable. He won this race a couple of years ago and lost his way a bit last year so it's good to have him back.
"This a first Group winner for the partnership which is great. The BHA have brought in these joint-licences. Obviously they're fairly renowned down under. All the owners have been really receptive to it and it's great to do it all with Dad."
A 5-1 shot, Century Dream led a bunch on the far side through the straight mile as the field initially split into two groups, and it quickly became clear that the far side was the place to be as they all converged away from the rail.
From there the winner had a clear advantage and never really looked in danger of being passed as 11-8 favourite King Of Comedy and Zaaki failed to make inroads. The former came out on top in a close call for second with Stormy Antarctic fourth.
