'He lost his eye before he was broken in' - one-eyed Jack Daniel wins on debut

The one-eyed Jack Daniel produced a shock on his racecourse debut to strike at 25-1 and reward connections for their patience with the injury-plagued three-year-old.

Jack Daniel broke a foot and also suffered an eye infection - which meant it had to be removed – all before he was broken in by trainer Declan Carroll.

But the hard work appeared to be worth it as the Danny Fantom Racing-owned son of Equiano kicked clear from a prominent position to land the 7f median auction maiden by a length and a quarter under Harrison Shaw.

"That win has given us a lot a pleasure," said Carroll, who recorded a 97-1 double after Machree's victory, also under Shaw, won the 5f handicap.

"He lost his eye as a two-year-old before he was even broken in. He's a big horse who has always shown ability. He's a work in progress, but it's good he's done the business.

"I'd imagine he'll come on from this. We like him a lot. He's got a good temperament and was still quite green, so we think there's a bit of improvement to come."

Carroll added: "The owner has been good to me so I'm thrilled for him, he's had some rotten bad luck. The horse is named after his son [Jack Daniel Fantom], but he does like a drink as well!"

Traffic issues

Adam Farragher missed his first ride after getting stuck in traffic but fortunately arrived in time to partner Sea La Rosa to victory in the 1m2f handicap for trainer William Haggas, who was completing an across-the-card treble after a double at Yarmouth.
