Gavin Cromwell is eyeing a 1,000 Guineas trial next season for classy two-year-old Sunset Shiraz after she deservedly got off the mark in maiden company at odds of 1-7.

Runner-up in the Debutante and Weld Park Stakes at the Curragh this season, the Moyglare Stakes third had too much for her rivals as she took a significant drop in class nine days on from hitting the frame in the Listed Staffordstown Stud Stakes.

"It's more relief than joy," Cromwell told Racing TV. "She's been busy and to win a race with her is great."

He added: "She looked brilliant and Gary Carroll said she felt as good as ever. She's a good, hardy, strong filly.

"She won't run again this season. I'd imagine a Guineas trial would be on the cards next year. She's been placed in lots of good races and with her rating [of 104] alone she'd be entitled to run in one."

Sussex off the mark

Well-bred Ballydoyle juvenile Sussex proved disappointing when sent off favourite on his second start at Tipperary but showed his true worth with a gutsy maiden win over 1m1f under Wayne Lordan, returning at 12-1.

Lordan said of the Dubawi colt, who holds an entry in Saturday's Group 3 Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown: "The pace has been holding up towards the front here over the two days and this horse handles the ground so I was happy to let him gallop away.

"He had experience and fitness in his favour, having had two runs. I'm sure he'll be able to step up in trip next year. He did it well."
