Cieren Fallon's advice 'worked a treat' as Anjella seals breakthrough success

Not much can compare with winning your first Group 1 after 30 years of training, but William Muir says he takes just as much satisfaction from winners like Anjella, who broke her maiden at the tenth attempt in the 6f handicap, as he does from Coronation Cup hero Pyledriver.

Despite working well at home, the three-year-old filly, owned by Frank and Gary Hope, could not put it all together on the track and it took some advice from winning jockey Cieren Fallon to help turn her fortunes around.

After she disappointed on her first two starts of the year, both on the all-weather, Muir said: "After Cieren rode her last week he said to try to go on a straight track on the grass and put the hood on to take her down and take it off at the start, and it worked a treat.

"The owners have been very patient with her. It’s been disappointment after disappointment on the racecourse but from the way she gallops at home I thought if she can’t win races I need to be looking in the mirror because this is stupid."

Muir, who now trains in partnership with Chris Grassick, added: "You're always trying to get the best out of whatever horse you have, whether it's Pyledriver or Anjella. I beat myself up more over her than Pyledriver because I knew she had the ability. Fingers crossed we have her sorted now and we can step forward."

Talbeyah bounces back

Trainer Owen Burrows hopes to claim some black type with Talbeyah before the end of the season after she led home a one-two for owners Shadwell in the 1m2f fillies’ handicap.

The three-year-old, who cost $310,000 as a yearling and finished fourth in a Listed contest at Goodwood last time, beat Anghaam by half a length under Jim Crowley.

Burrows said: “Jim felt she wasn’t quite physically strong enough to cope with the conditions last time, so we thought we’d drop back to a handicap and try to work our way back up with the plan of getting some black type by the end of the season. She took some time to pick up but was nicely on top by the end. We’ll keep her in handicaps for now."
