Camorra no longer a secret as Ger Lyons runs riot with impressive Curragh treble
Friday: Curragh
The 2022 running of the Group 2 Comer International Curragh Cup may not have been the strongest in its history, but that will not matter to Ger Lyons as Camorra landed the biggest win of his career.
The son of Zoffany was the centrepiece of a 428-1 treble for Lyons and rider Colin Keane, staying on well to wear down Gear Up and score by a length.
As they passed the line, Lyons received a text from part-owner David Spratt, which simply said "Melbourne Cup," but the winning trainer had his feet a little more firmly on the ground.
"We love this horse, he's one of our favourites and he has really matured," said Lyons. "He surprised us last year when he won on Champions Weekend, and we were sort of protecting him with the Ebor in mind and this came around.
"I knew he would run well, we thought he was our Ebor horse but now the brains behind the outfit is thinking Melbourne Cup. We'll tell him to get his visa ready, but he'll be on his own! But anything is possible."
Lyons filly bids rivals goodbye
After saddling two juvenile newcomers to score on Guineas weekend last month, Lyons might well have topped that as Slan Abhaile made a very impressive debut in the opening maiden.
Under Colin Keane, the filly was slow out of the traps before getting a clear passage and finishing strong for a length-and-a-quarter victory over front-runner Victoria Road.
"We haven't been running many lately, we have been very patient with our two-year-olds. The fillies are better than the colts. This filly has been very immature and we have given her as much time as we can," said Lyons
"Colin lost his sat nav a bit, he was all over the shop. He hasn't ridden her that much at home and he was very impressed with her. She was still very green pulling up and she will improve plenty for it. She's a nice filly," he added.
Champions Weekend for Mutasarref
The most fancied leg of the Lyons treble delivered as 9-4 market leader Mutasarref defied top-weight in the 7f handicap, holding off fast-finishing duo All In The Mind and Ice Cold In Alex by upwards of half-a-length.
"He's a stakes horse in a handicap. I don't know if he's a group 3 but he's definitely a Listed. We'll go to Champions Weekend with him now," said Lyons.
