Since the arrival of a little-known Middle Eastern sheikh on to the scene in 2010, the Qatari investment and influence on British racing has been substantial.

Sheikh Fahad Al Thani, cousin of the Emir of Qatar, has been the figurehead for investment from the gas rich state, first through his own Pearl Bloodstock enterprise and then alongside his brothers Sheikh Hamad and Sheikh Suhaim via Qipco Holdings and Qatar Racing.

The Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club (QREC), which yesterday extended its Goodwood sponsorship, and Al Shaqab Racing are further independent sources of investment from Qatar into British, Irish and French horseracing.
