There will probably be no guard of honour or cheering throng today. Let's just hope we get a winner worthy of her name – we are certainly due one.

Rockfel got that heroine's reception after her easy three-length win in the Aintree Derby in November 1938, a performance which caused the Evening Post reporter to write: "By all Turf enthusiasts, she is acclaimed the best of her age in this country, if not the best in the world."

Nor was that 1930s media hype: she had already won the 1,000 Guineas and the Oaks that season and beaten the colts in the Champion Stakes.
