What we learned from day two to help for the rest of the Cheltenham Festival
Worth giving The Worlds End a thought
Tom George has one Grade 1 in the book after Summerville Boy’s Supreme win on Tuesday. The performances of Black Op, who gave Samcro a race in the Ballymore, and God’s Own outrunning his 40-1 odds in the Champion Chase, suggests it is worth having a second look at The Worlds End in the Sun Bets Stayers’ Hurdle despite his overnight price of 33-1.
Remember, he was running a blinder in the thick of the action up front when falling two out in the Albert Bartlett last year. He picked himself up to win a Grade 1 at Aintree after.
Yes, he has been well held by Stayers' Hurdle favourite Sam Spinner this season but he has not run since the end of January and his stable is again showing it blooms in the spring.
Elliott has his work cut out
Gordon Elliott was crowned champion festival trainer last year by a pixel after he tied Willie Mullins with six winners apiece but collected the title by dint of having more seconds.
Remembering Mullins was winless at this stage last year, Elliott is up against it despite his treble on Wednesday, which cut Mullins’ lead to 5-3.
That is with Mullins having Laurina, who is seen as the Thursday banker for punters, but don’t rule out Elliott, who fought back after being headed last year. He still has 16 more runners over the last two days with four of his six runners on Thursday priced up in single figures overnight in five of the races.
Jack Kennedy has the Love back
Jack Kennedy is back where he deserves to be, riding festival winners. After his double on Samcro and Veneer Of Charm he will be brimful of confidence and just happens to partner Shattered Love in the JLT Novices' Chase that opens Thursday's proceedings. Kennedy has won all five times he has ridden the Gordon Elliott-trained mare.
Give Ireland the BetBright Prestbury Cup now
This Cup match is over at half-time. Last year Ireland had eight of their 19 winners in the 28 frames played. This year Ireland lead 9-5 and, looking at the Mullins and Elliott axis, with Jessica Harrington joining in over the last two days, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Ireland could make it an amazing 20 winners.
