Sofas and smart screens rather than Pimm’s and panamas are the order of the first day in August as Flat racing fanatics try to solve the various puzzles on Stewards’ Cup day from home.

Concerns over an increase in Covid-19 cases led to the government on Friday halting Saturday’s scheduled pilot event for a crowd of 5,000 spectators on the South Downs, meaning all and sundry will be watching the Glorious Goodwood finale from their living rooms.

The prime minister's lunchtime announcement was the latest reminder of these uncertain times, so any normality on offer has to be grasped with glee. A 28-runner helter-skelter Stewards’ Cup offers just that.
