Racing is a game of fine margins and a successful campaign often hinges on one big day. The problem arises when everyone targets the same prize and the Ladbrokes Trophy is high on the shortlist.

A staying chase at a fair, galloping track relatively early in the season works perfectly for a mixture of Gold Cup and Grand National types, while a number of inexperienced chasers are often set the stiff task on their first season outside of novice company.

With such a mixture of form on offer, there is a hazy distinction between proven and unproven runners. There is the added bonus that the Ladbrokes Trophy is a handicap that draws big fields and creates enticing betting markets. What more could we ask for?
