We did not know then, but we know now, that the maiden hurdle (12.20) charged with opening the Ladbrokes Winter Carnival in 2015 contained a future superstar.

On that occasion the 2m contest was won by subsequent Champion Hurdle hero Buveur D'Air. It is most unlikely the latest staging will contain a horse anywhere near so talented, but there is no doubt Colin Tizzard's stable holds Lostintranslation in high regard.

Robbie Power is coming to Newbury solely to partner the five-year-old, whom he has also ridden into second at this track and Chepstow in recent weeks.

Tizzard's son Joe said: "He's put up two striking performances. They’ve given him a mark of 125 and I think that’s lenient as I think he’s better than that.

"We decided to come here as this was the only day the boys who own him could come racing before Christmas, so we hope to win this maiden hurdle and then we’ll start setting our sights a bit higher.

"He's a beautiful horse, a real powerful chap, and he'll definitely jump fences and will definitely stay further in time."

Tizzard, writing in his Coral blog, said: "He’s on a par with Slate House and White Moon. He’s up there with our top novice hurdlers. We really like him."

Dusky chasing a rare win in Walwyn race

No trainer won the Hennessy Gold Cup more times than Fulke Walwyn, who triumphed on seven occasions. Now the Hennessy has become the Ladbrokes Trophy, on the eve of which the 2m novice handicap chase (12.50) is being conducted for a trophy bearing the late jumping legend's name.

One of those trying to win it is the Alan King-trained Dusky Legend, whose 15 racecourse appearances have ended on ten occasions with a second-place finish, including on her last three starts, the most recent of which came at Bangor.

King said: "She ran a blinder in a Listed race at Bangor, where she jumped super and was unlucky to just pitch on landing over the last. She does not like winter ground, so it'll be good to squeeze another race in before she has her break."

This could be the day for This Is It

The light will be fading fast come the closing stages of the 3m Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle (3.35) that wraps up the card. Indeed, depending on how slowly some of the runners come home, it may actually have gone dark.

Very much hoping his contender ends the stamina test at the front end of the field is trainer Nick Mitchell, whose This Is It seeks to follow up his Exeter success gained on a soft surface 24 days ago.

"Last time out I think he won despite the ground and despite needing the run," said Mitchell. "That is what really pleased me about his performance. He showed grit and class to win.

"He needs to improve but I think he's an improving, unexposed horse. He also gets into the race on a light weight.

"Win, lose or draw, though, we know he's a nice horse for the future."
