There can be such a thing as too much history. Anyone trying to find winners at Newmarket today will have some idea what life has been like for Sir John Chilcot of late.

Like the man charged with getting to the bottom of the Iraq war, you have to sift through a mountain of information on the past, seeking the gems that are actually relevant to your quest - let's just hope this particular search won't take seven years.

There will be plenty of history in the air as celebrations of Newmarket's 350th anniversary reach their peak and the Moët & Chandon July Festival gets under way with the running of the age-old Newmarket Town Plate.
