The one race you don't want to miss on Tuesday
British Stallion Studs EBF Conditions Stakes | 5f, 3yo+ | RTV
Why is it interesting?
Tarboosh returns to defend a race he won 12 months ago but will need to reverse a run that has seen him go winless in 2019.
The six-year-old has undergone a wind operation since his last start and trainer Paul Midgley will be hoping the procedure can help the son of Bahamian Bounty rediscover the form that saw him win four races last season.
Fierce competition comes from Stake Acclaim, who returned from a 517-day break to win at Newbury in April before finishing a respectable fourth in Listed company at Haydock in early June.
Lightly-raced five-year-old Kyllang Rock was just five and three-quarter lengths behind Battaash in the 2017 King George Stakes at Goodwood and is another towards the head of the market.
The son of Kyllachy got the better of subsequent Nunthorpe victor Alpha Delphini at Musselburgh in March 2018 but looked in need of the run at Wolverhampton on his return from a 339-day absence in April.
Fairy Falcon and Peggie Sue bring interesting form to the table and complete the five-runner field.
What do the stats say?
Favourites have been successful in three of the past four runnings, while in the same period no horse with a Racing Post Rating of lower than 105 has been successful.
A plus for Tarboosh is his trainer's recent form. Midgley has a 25 per cent strike-rate over the past two weeks boasting a level-stakes profit of +£13.25.
Another positive for last year's winner is his record on good to soft ground. He has won four of his five starts on ground with such a description.
What do the trainers say?
Dean Ivory, trainer of Stake Acclaim
I'm really looking forward to it provided we get some more rain. He's had lots of different issues of late, we found a lot of different problems with him a few years ago and then gave him a lovely long break. He came back to win well at Newbury and then slipped coming out the stalls last time and he just pulled a muscle in his back. He's fine now and he likes it soft, that's when he's at his best.
James Tate, trainer of Kyllang Rock
He is working well at home, there's no question about that, and he looks really well and he's moving really well. He does have questions to answer because he had a big layoff last year and that was a poor return at Wolverhampton and then we had a small problem after that as well. The rain is welcome as he needs it soft, in fact it can't get too soft for him.
Spotlight verdict
Last year's winner Tarboosh finished ahead of STAKE ACCLAIM when placed in a heavy-ground Listed event at Haydock in June but it's fair to say Paul Midgley's gelding hasn't quite been at his best this year. Stake Acclaim is better than he showed at Haydock and, if somewhere near the form he showed when making all in a good Newbury handicap on soft ground in April, he could be hard to catch here. Kyllang Rock is also very useful when on song, while it's quite possible we are yet to see the best of Fairy Falcon.
