The Briefing: your guide as Supreme Novices' hopefuls meet at Navan

Felix Desjy: on a retrieval mission after recent Navan flop
Felix Desjy: on a retrieval mission after recent Navan flop

At this embryonic stage of the core jumps season, it is no real surprise that a novice has yet to come out and grasp the Supreme Novices' Hurdle market by the scruff of the neck.

But that could change today, as two high-class prospects in the Willie Mullins-trained Quick Grabim and the Gordon Elliott-trained Felix Desjy do battle in the Grade 3 For Auction Hurdle at Navan (1.05).

Just 30 minutes later, familiar faces Jezki and Arctic Fire clash in the Grade 2 Lismullen Hurdle (1.35). The old-timers will certainly have to roll back the years to prevent the super mare Apple's Jade from retaining the race, though.

The feature race of the day at Navan however is the Fortria Chase (2.10), where useful two-mile chasers Ballyoisin, Doctor Phoenix and Ordinary World should ensure a compelling, well-run spectacle.

There are a couple of meetings in Britain too, with Sandown's seven-race card featuring the Listed Future Stars Intermediate Chase (2.20) – won last year by Cheltenham Gold Cup second Might Bite.

This year's race boasts a small but select field with Terrefort, Elegant Escape, Coo Star Sivola and Thomas Patrick putting their Ladbrokes Trophy credentials on the line. Ffos Las is the remaining venue for racing today.

The best of Racing Post Sport

Always one of the standout fixtures in the calendar, the panel preview the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium – the final leg of a Premier League treble-header on Sunday after matches at Anfield and Stamford Bridge.

Final thought

With Irish tracks generally dividing their best racing between Saturday and Sunday, one wonders whether Britain might follow suit one day. Arguably, Sundays sometimes suffer for Saturdays overflowing with meetings in Britain.
