Handicap rivals Tinandali and Fifth Position well backed on day one of Goodwood
The David O'Meara-trained Tinandali is proving popular with punters this morning, with the four-year-old cut into a best-priced 5-1 favourite (from 7-1 overnight) for the Unibet You're On Handicap (1.45) over a mile at Glorious Goodwood.
Also popular in the same race is Fifth Position, trained by Roger Varian, who after opening at 9-1 last night can now be backed at no better than 11-2 to gain success for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid.
Stradivarius remains a strong odds-on shot to secure a record fourth Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup (3.15).
The six-year-old is now a general 4-7 (from 8-13 overnight) to follow up his resounding victory in the Ascot Gold Cup and eclipse Double Trigger to become the only horse to win the 2m Group 1 four times.
His nearest market rival, the Aidan O'Brien-trained Irish Derby winner Santiago, is the general 2-1 second favourite with support seeing some firms clip the son of Authorized into 15-8.
It appears punters feel the race will turn into something of a match between the two market principals, with the next best-backed horse, Nayef Road, a general 18-1 shot.
O'Brien looks to hold the key to the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes (2.15), with Chesham winner Battleground backed into a general 5-4 favourite for the Group 2 for juveniles.
Another key race on this afternoon's card is the Group 2 Qatar Lennox Stakes (2.45), where Sir Dancelot, winner in both 2018 and 2019, has been backed into 6-1 (from 13-2).
The ground at Goodwood is good, good to soft (in places), with the weather set fair for the afternoon and temperatures expected to reach up to 20 degrees.
Ed Arkell, clerk of the course, said: "It is a lovely, bright sunny morning after a rather damp, miserable day yesterday.
"The ground is good, good to soft in places following 2.4 millimetres of rain yesterday and 12 millimetres of rain over the weekend.
"The track is in wonderful condition and the forecast for the rest of the week is for dry and sunny weather and becoming increasingly warm."
