Spotlight on Newcastle as apprentice aces Egan and Shoemark do battle
Newcastle provides tonight's all-weather action with eight races on the card and includes an intriguing sub-plot with David Egan and Kieran Shoemark, who are going toe to toe in the apprentice title race that ends on Saturday, each heading north for two rides. Here are three horses it may pay to follow this evening.
Egan will be hoping Navajo Star is one to follow as she is the jockey's first ride on the card and appears to be his best chance. Trained by the capable Mick Appleby, the three-year-old was an easy five-length winner at Chelmsford seven days ago and will try to defy a penalty. She should be in the mix if in that form again.

If Egan does win, Shoemark will be eager for a quick reply 30 minutes later on Reshoun, perhaps the pick of his pair. The Ian Williams-trained inmate is making his all-weather debut and was beaten only a neck at Leicester last week. The three-year-old is in store for a 6lb rise after today so could be primed to strike – and his jockey will be keen for that to happen.

It is not far off a 700-mile round trip from Tim Vaughan's south Wales base to Newcastle, so it might be worth taking the hint and siding with the gelding to earn some diesel money. The son of Kodiac, won twice on Lingfield's all-weather in the spring but has not fired on two turf starts since being gelded. He looks suited by the return to an artificial surface.
