Looks can be deceptive. As we approach the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, that old adage seems particularly appropriate.

In theory, the Ebor festival's Thursday centrepiece would appear to be one of the calendar's least inspiring Group 1 contests, given it differs from the opening day's Juddmonte International in being limited to a single sex. You might think that. This year you would most definitely be wrong.

An event inaugurated in 1849 is actually enjoying one of its richest periods. Two of the last four runnings were won by Enable, who progressed from her opening success to land the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. The 2018 winner Sea Of Class so nearly overhauled Enable to claim the Arc, while last season's heroine Love was ante-post favourite for Longchamp glory until circumstances intervened.
