This race went through a golden period in the 2000s when it garnered a reputation as an early-season Champion Hurdle trial.

It all started in 2002 when the gallant grey Rooster Booster stormed up the hill to score by nine lengths off top weight of 11st 12lb. He returned the following year as a runaway Champion Hurdle winner and the quality kept on coming.
