Revich bids to make the most of plum draw for Richard Spencer

Getting a good draw at Chester is not enough on its own – you have to be able to take advantage of it.

It is no good starting from pole position in stall one if you lack the speed to make use of it and end up being boxed in behind those whose greater speed got them past you in the crucial early stages.

That has not been an issue for Revich. Twice he has had the plum draw round here and each time he has broken well, gone straight into the lead and never been headed. He's in stall one again and will be just as hard to beat at a track where he has won three times.

Revich will be all the better for creditable efforts in the Lincoln and Spring Cup this season and looks sure to run well.

The draw is a key factor in drawing up a list of serious rivals. Only once in the last eight runnings was the winner drawn wider than five and that was when the leaders appeared to go too fast in 2017.

Dulas is drawn next door to Revich and looks to have put his occasional slow starts behind him judged on his recent Haydock second on his first run since being gelded.

Andrew Balding knows a Chester horse when he sees one and Grove Ferry could be a contender from stall three.

The four-year-old has progressed throughout his career, showed he was still on the up when winning a decent prize from the front at Lingfield in February and is easily forgiven a free-going eighth under a penalty in the Lincoln.

Nor can Mark Johnston and Franny Norton ever be ruled out of any race at Chester. They combine with Gobi Sunset, who has plenty of early pace and he could well play a part from stall four.

What they say

David Barron, trainer of Kynren and Another Batt
With his draw, Kynren couldn't win if he set off now. I hope Another Batt runs some sort of race, he looked good first time we ran him but we've struggled a bit with him since.

Harry Herbert, managing director of Highclere Thoroughbreds, owners of Ascension
He needed his first run in the Lincoln and ran better than his finishing position. He has come on for that and this looks the right sort of spot for him. If he can wend his way from a less-than-ideal draw he should run well.

Richard Spencer, trainer of Revich
He likes it round there and has run two nice races this year. The rain is in his favour and hopefully he can make the most of his draw.

Ian Williams, trainer of Ejtilaab
I was looking forward to running him after his run at Musselburgh but he's poorly drawn for the way he likes to run and it will be very difficult for him to get across unless he's sharp out of the gates.

Charlie Hills, trainer of Dulas
He's come out of Haydock in good form. He ran a great race there and I'd have thought he should handle the track as he's got speed.
