French rider Thierry Jarnet delivered a standout performance at Ascot yesterday but it was not enough to prevent the Rest of the World securing team glory in a Shergar Cup clash that contained more twists than a Dick Francis novel and offered a platform for some of the world's top jockeys to showcase their talents.

At a sun-baked Ascot, the three-strong Rest of the World team, featuring captain Silvestre de Sousa, South African Gavin Lerena and Japanese rider Kenichi Ikezoe, recorded one-twos in the second and fifth race but ultimately secured victory with a last-gasp fourth in the final race, worth a priceless five points and enough to see off the European challenge 68 points to 65.
