Racing returns to Newmarket's July course for the first time this year where Nile Rodgers and Chic are set to play to the crowds after racing.

The seven-race card kicks off with two £50,000 handicaps, including the opening Bentley Cambridge Handicap (2.10) in which Awe is bound to be a popular selection.

The son of Bated Breath looked a bit unlucky when involved in plenty of traffic problems up the inside when eighth behind Beatboxer at Haydock last time and is down in trip from a mile.

Trainer William Haggas said: "He looked a bit unfortunate last time but he's back on a straight track which may not be ideal. On the plus side, there's no travelling involved."

His chief market rival looks to be Flashcard, trained by Andrew Balding, who was another who was crowded out on his seasonal debut at Goodwood last month.

Balding said: "He disappointed a bit last time at Goodwood but that was his first time back after a break. We expect him to be competitive in this sort of contest."

At the bottom of the handicap in the 12-runner contest is the Michael Bell-trained Regular, who finally confirmed the promise of his smart homework when breaking his maiden at Leicester last time.

Of the Queen's runner, the Newmarket trainer said: "He looks on a winnable mark from what we have seen at home. I just hope we don't get too much rain which wouldn't be in his favour."

Richard Fahey has two in the race and he said: "I thought Gabrial The Wire did well to win at Doncaster the other day and maybe Chester doesn't suit him as well as more conventional tracks looking at his recent efforts. He has to go forward again in this but has no weight on his back so could do so."

He added: "Mr Diamond ran all right at Goodwood last time. Maybe he just got stopped at the wrong time of the race and he is capable of going close in this from the foot of the handicap."

Thirty-five minutes later, 17 are set to go to post for the Bernard Sunley Handicap (2.45), which will be the first race of the season on the Beacon course around the corner as it is over 1m6f.

Last year's winner Amazing Red represents Ed Dunlop and James Doyle and finished just behind the reopposing What A Welcome at Goodwood last time.

Dunlop said: "He's in good form and won't mind any rain but he's up 9lb from last year which makes it hard."

What A Welcome was denied by just a nose by the prolific King's Advice last time and his trainer Patrick Chamings said: "We have a good record at the July course and What A Welcome has been in good form since Goodwood."

Andew Balding fields Lissitzky, who was a winner on the neighbouring Rowley Mile course last time.

He said: "He won well last time but is up in the weights for that. We've put the cheekpieces on him to make him travel with more fluency."
