Punting pointers and trainer quotes for the Stewards' Cup consolation race

Richard Fahey has assembled a six-strong attack on this Stewards' Cup consolation race, with Frankie Dettori partnering his market principal Gabrial The Devil.

Fahey landed this race with dual winner Johannes in 2009 and 2012, and the Marwan Koukash-owned Gabrial The Devil arrives in good form after a narrow win at Haydock and unlucky third at Chester most recently.

Fahey and Koukash are also represented by Gabrial The Saint, Brian The Snail and Powerallied, while Paddy Power and Get The Rhythm return to action at the West Sussex track after failing to figure in the Magnolia Cup and a 5f handicap on Thursday.

Fahey said: "The track and trip favour Gabrial The Devil, but he would be ideally suited by a bit slower ground, which would also favour Paddy Power.

"The draw did Gabrial The Saint no favours last time and he's pleased me since, while Marwan was keen to run Powerallied as it's a nice prize to go for.

"Get The Rhythm will be better suited by this step up to six furlongs and Brian The Snail has the ability to run well if on song."

Balding takes aim with Ballyquinn

Andrew Balding landed this £75,000 event with market leader Scorching Heat two years ago and is likely to saddle another favourite with the progressive Ballyquinn.

James Doyle's mount has finished second in two starts at Ascot and Newmarket this season and is open to improvement following five runs in handicap company.

Balding said: "It's a step up in class for Ballyquinn, but he's been very consistent. We've had this race in mind for a while and hopefully the track will suit him."

Tommy G bids for a repeat

Jim Goldie and Silvestre de Sousa teamed up for success with Tommy G last year and combine once again as the six-year-old returns off a 4lb lower mark.

Runner-up in this race in 2017, the versatile Tommy G disappointed most recently at Ayr but could bounce right back to form for Goldie, who also runs Primo's Comet, the mount of David Egan.

He loves this sort of track and is at his best in big fields. You can put a line through his last run and the time before that he ran a cracker at Ascot. One of these big races will fall his way one day and hopefully it'll be this one.

The experience he gained of the track will set him in good stead and I'm hopeful he can back it up with another good run. Lightning Charlie ran well in this race last year. He's been a bit hit and miss this season but likes Goodwood. Count Otto will appreciate the return to six furlongs and will be suited by a good gallop.

He ran a fantastic race the other day and clearly likes the track. We would welcome a little rain and I'm hoping there is speed among the low draws to take him into the race. He's been a great horse for previous connections and us and he's such a likeable horse to have in the yard – it would be great to see him win another big prize.

Boy In The Bar ran respectably in this race last year and is better drawn this time. Ryan [Moore] takes the ride but his mark leaves little margin for error. I was impressed with Mokaatil's run at Yarmouth on Tuesday and he has an each-way chance with Angus [Villiers] taking off 7lb.

Charlie Wallis, trainer of King Robert
He ran really well at Chester and the owners have been keen to have a crack at this race. We've waited for this and he goes well fresh. He should be competitive off this mark.
