Punchestown festival longshots: three horses at double-figure odds on day three
Thursday's Punchestown card looks a minefield for punters, so we thought we'd take a look beyond the obvious for some bigger-priced horses who have the potential to outrun their odds. Our Ireland editor Richard Forristal selects three contenders with appeal for each-way punters.
Call It Magic is getting on in years now but he has some experience over the banks and could outrun long odds.
Ross O'Sullivan's 11-year-old has mixed it between point-to-points and the track in the last couple of seasons, and he ran one of his best races of late when bouncing around this course in the PP Hogan Memorial in February, before succumbing to higher rated horses. He finished an honourable fourth, and he performed to a similar level again when finishing fifth in the lady riders' handicap chase at Fairyhouse.
Clearly, he has something to find on official figures, but he's the sort to give you a good run for your money and he has a banks maestro on top in Keith Donoghue.
He will need to bounce back from some relatively lacklustre efforts but Bacardys isn't without a squeak.
Although Flooring Porter looks a worthy favourite, this is otherwise a wide-open division, and Bacardys wasn't disgraced when beaten 22 lengths in the equivalent event at Cheltenham. He was bang there on the heels of the leading group turning in, but could only plug on up the hill.
This is a track where he has won a Grade 1, and he was second in this race behind Unowhatimeanharry when it was last run in 2019. If he can recapture some of that magic, he might not be too far away under Sean O'Keeffe.
Thursday's free racing tips: six horses to consider putting in your multiples
Capilano Bridge is one that should outrun fancy odds now he steps up in trip.
Conor O'Dwyer's charge has won twice over the minimum distance this season, but he began to look as if the handicapper may have a hold of him last time. On that occasion at Fairyhouse, he finished nearly five lengths behind Max Flamingo, when he wasn't beaten for stamina over 2m6f as he kept on all the way.
Bold Emperor, well behind him in fifth, has since given the form a solid look when finishing second at Kilbeggan, and Capilano Bridge gets in off the same mark. He should run a big race under his Irish Grand National-winning rider Ricky Doyle.
