Paul Kealy thinks the Finale Juvenile Hurdle is Nassalam's race to lose

Four of the last six winners have added at least one further Grade 1 to their CVs and 2016 scorer Defi Du Seuil became the first to go on to land the Triumph since Mysilv in 1993.

Three-time Betfair Chase winner Bristol De Mai announced himself on the British scene when cruising to victory in this in 2014, while last year it was the turn of Allmankind, now a Grade 1-winning novice chaser, to score a runaway success.

Prospects improving for Welsh National but Chepstow to inspect again

Runaway wins have been a feature of Nassalam's two British outings for Gary Moore, who seems to have a ready replacement in the juvenile division for last year's exceptional performer Goshen.

Like Goshen, Nassalam is a free-going front-runner, but unlike his now mercurial stablemate, he seems to be a far more fluent jumper, albeit one who edged to his left at every flight last time.

Putting a figure on his ability after two wide-margins wins in desperate company is not easy. The BHA assessor, for instance, reckons he is just 4lb better than David Pipe's Grade 2 winner Adagio.

Racing Post Ratings puts him a massive 18lb clear, while the betting suggests it's something between the two.

Also between the two is the Paul Nicholls-trained Houx Gris, who has his British debut after winning two of four starts in France.

Elham Valley is the only other runner in single figures following a smooth debut win at Sandown. He was rated only 74 on the Flat after winning a seller at Goodwood in August, but that might not mean much for his new career. After all, Mysilv was rated just 66 in that sphere.

If there is to be a shock, it will surely come from Yggdrasil, third to Elham Valley on what was his racecourse debut.

Trainer Nick Williams won this with Le Rocher in 2013 and he has also run three maidens in the race, two of whom were Reve De Sivola and Coo Star Sivola, both finishing third.

Yggdrasil is a half-brother to Williams' Cheltenham Festival winner Siruh Du Lac, so there is hope in his pedigree, although their six other siblings were all very moderate.

Still, if looks are a guide to talent, this striking specimen will have a future, so he is one to look out for, even though this particular contest looks Nassalam's to lose.
Race analysis by Paul Kealy

What they say

David Pipe, trainer of Adagio
He's done very well. He goes to Chepstow in good form, although he probably wouldn't want the ground as soft as it's likely to be.

Tom George, trainer of Bannister
He's an interesting horse and he probably ran a bit flat at Auteuil last time, when the trip over to France the time before probably took a bit more out of him than we thought it had. The handicapper has absolutely pulverised him, putting him up 25lb for coming second at Compiegne. He'll make a very good novice chaser next season and will either feature in the best juvenile races in England or head back to France in the spring.

Fergal O’Brien, trainer of Elham Valley
I'm looking forward to seeing him run. His Sandown form was franked when the runner-up, Hudson De Grugy, won last Saturday. Maybe we're shooting at the stars, but we'll take our chance. He's a lovely horse.

Paul Nicholls, trainer of Houx Gris
He's done everything really nicely since we've had him. He managed to win at Auteuil, although what that form is worth, I don't know. He's used to running in soft ground in France and we're hopeful of a nice run.

Stan Moore, trainer of Mr Shady
He's a solid little horse. Perhaps we're aiming a little high, but I'm hoping he runs well enough to get into the Fred Winter. I think he's got every chance of finishing in the first five. He goes to Chepstow in great form and is a lively outsider. It's nice to have a horse to run in a Grade 1. They're a great bunch of lads who own half of him with me.

Gary Moore, trainer of Nassalam
It's a big jump up in class after his two wins at Fontwell, but he's a horse we like a lot. He goes well at home and I think he's improving. We'll see what happens at Chepstow before making a plan, but the Triumph is obviously a race we're considering at this stage.
