Our betting editor Keith Melrose with his expert analysis on the Dante
Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes (Group 2) | 1m2½f, 3yo | ITV4/RTV
Having the Dante after the Derby in perpetuity would probably suit Sir Michael Stoute just fine. Imagine saying that ten years ago!
Stoute used the Dante as his Derby trial of choice for decades, but the most recent of his six wins came back in 2011. Moreover, since Carlton House went from Dante success to finish third at Epsom that year, Stoute has saddled only two runners in the Derby.
In the meantime, he has enjoyed increasing success in middle-distance three-year-old races at Royal Ascot, notably the Hampton Court Stakes which he has won three times since 2009. To all intents and purposes the Hampton Court and the Dante have swapped roles this year and, as though to emphasise the point, Stoute is immediately back in the mix at York.
