One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on New Year's Day
One trainer
With a haul of 80 winners and not far off £1 million in prize-money, 2019 was a super season on the Flat for trainer Keith Dalgleish. But he is no one-trick pony, far from it.
Indeed, this jumps season is set to be his best ever as he closes in on his highest tally of winners having already surpassed his record prize-money score.
Dalgleish has no fewer than eight runners over jumps at Musselburgh on New Year's Day and is likely to improve on his impressive figures further.
One jockey
Patrick Mullins was the headline-maker during the Christmas period in Ireland, topped by Grade 1 wins on Faugheen and Sharjah.
The star amateur takes one ride on New Year's Day at Fairyhouse on bumper debutant Fais Ton Chemin. Given the festival period Mullins has had, you would not put it past him to be celebrating more success.
One horse
Warren Greatrex has always held Emitom in the highest regard and his staying hurdler makes his seasonal bow against an experienced field in the Dornan Engineering Relkeel Hurdle (3.10).
The six-year-old has only been defeated once in his six-race career, when second to Champ at Aintree, so it will be interesting to see how far the five-year-old can go this season.
One race
The Grade 3 Paddy Power Handicap Chase (2.00) has attracted one of the best fields in recent years with a top-class line-up competing for the £70,000 prize.
Graded-level performers Kalashnikov, Saint Calvados and Cepage are the big names in the field but they'll take on a field of ambitious pretenders. They include Ex Patriot, Magic Saint and Oldgrangewood.
It promises to be a fascinating handicap, but finding the winner will not be easy.
