One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch at Ascot on Friday
Trainer
Aidan O’Brien has a plethora of strongly-fancied Royal Ascot contenders on day four, headed by Hermosa in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes (4.20).
The dual 1,000 Guineas heroine is certain to start a hot favourite as she bids to record a third consecutive Group 1 victory.
Ten Sovereigns, who stands out in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup (3.40), and Japan, who runs in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes (3.05), give the Ballydoyle trainer an extraordinarily powerful hand.
Jockey
It could prove to be a Ryan Moore benefit day, but another top-class rider with a series of good chances is Jim Crowley.
The fact that the jockey sweats down to 8st 7lb to partner Layaleena is surely indicative that a huge run is expected in the Sandringham Stakes (5.00).
Crowley, who was champion jockey in 2016, also has serious claims aboard Jash in the Commonwealth Cup and Corgi in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (5.35).
Horse
He will have to improve again to taste Group 1 victory, but the manner in which Hello Youmzain crushed 2-13 hotpot Calyx at Haydock suggests Commonwealth Cup victory is entirely possible.
A dual Group 2 winner, the son of Kodiac remains relatively unexposed after just five career starts.
If he manages to progress again for that impressive success on Merseyside, Hello Youmzain will pose a major threat to favourite Ten Sovereigns.
Race
The Coronation Stakes, one of two Group 1 contests on the card, is always a fantastic race, and Hermosa is fast establishing herself as a crowd favourite after those two Guineas triumphs.
Front-running seems to have been the making of her, and it will be intriguing to see if those tactics are employed once again.
After all, it is never easy to make all on Ascot’s stiff mile.
