One key runner from each of the ITV races at Glorious Goodwood
Yuri Gagarin
1.45 Goodwood
Unibet You're On Handicap
The cleverly named Yuri Gagarin – by Sea The Moon and out of Soviet Terms – made a big impression on his first two starts, winning at Newcastle and Kempton.
But the Godolphin-owned four-year-old could only finish sixth on his latest appearance at Newmarket, and needs to bounce back. He is representing top connections and there should be plenty more to come on just his second start on turf.
Battleground
2.15 Goodwood
Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes
Battleground is as short as 10-1 for next year's 2,000 Guineas, and looks to establish his Classic chances in this quality Group 2, in which Pinatubo sizzled last season.
Battleground is a son of Arc winner Found and showed he had inherited plenty of his dam's class with an impressive victory in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot last time.
2.45 Goodwood
Qatar Lennox Stakes
The Roger Varian-trained colt was one of the talking horses coming into this season and, on just his fourth run, we will find out plenty more about him.
The son of Cappella Sansevero exploded onto the scene in Newbury's Mill Reef Stakes last season, but he massively disappointed in the Commonwealth Cup last month – finishing last of the 16 runners.
Being the only three-year-old in the field, he gets 7lb from his rivals which furthers his chances in a wide-open race.
Stradivarius
3.15 Goodwood
Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes
What more can be said about the outstanding Stradivarius? He remains the unprecedented star of the staying division and looked as good as ever at Royal Ascot last month with his ten-length demolition in the Gold Cup.
More history beckons as he targets a record fourth Goodwood Cup, potentially leaving behind fellow three-time winner Double Trigger. But standing in his way is a new challenger, Santiago, an Irish Derby winner who is in receipt of 15lb in weight allowances.
Paul Midgley's runners are beginning to hit top form and the trainer thrives with his sprinters. Eight-year-old Final Venture has fallen to an attractive mark - he has not been rated less than 100 since 2016 - but has ran well on two starts this season.
The concern is that Midgley has not had a winner at Goodwood in the last five years, but that comes from a small sample size of 11 runners, and some of those were placed. With that in mind, this potentially well-handicapped sprinter cannot be taken out of the equation.
