Midweek marvel - Frankie Dettori has five rides on enthralling youngsters' card

You can tell something interesting is taking place from the fact that Frankie Dettori is riding on a grey Wednesday afternoon in October.

All bar one of the eight races on 'Two-year-old day' at Newmarket are restricted to juveniles and there are a host of lightly raced, choicely bred horses among the 85 youngsters declared.

Dettori has had just 46 mounts on a Wednesday all year, but he has five rides for John Gosden here, including unraced pair Mostly, a half-sister to Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes winner Journey, and King Leonidas, a 750,000gns Kingman colt from the family of Rodrigo De Triano.

In the £40,000 'future stayers' nursery (3.40), which is restricted to those whose sire or dam won over 1m2f or further, he partners Chelmsford maiden winner Baptism.

Among his rivals are King's Caper and Flylikeaneagle, who represent Mark Johnston, whose subsequent Gordon Stakes winner Nayef Road finished third in the inaugural running last year, while William Haggas hopes York 1m second Convict can go one place better over this two-furlong longer trip.

"It's a trappy little race but it's valuable and he's got a chance," the trainer said. "He should get the trip well and I'd be hopeful he'll run well."

Newcomer Oriental Mystique has something to live up to in the restricted novice event (4.45), six years and a day after her dam Madame Chiang sprang a 33-1 surprise with a winning debut at Yarmouth. She is the first foal out of owner-breeder Kirsten Rausing's Musidora and Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes winner, and David Simcock, who also trained the dam, said: "She is quite interesting, we've been quite desperate to get a run into her.

"She's a good-actioned filly and how she'll handle the ground I don't know, but she has loads of potential and will end up being a nice filly. She's out of a Group 1 winner by Kingman so she's bred to be quite good.

"We'll just go out there and see what happens. We had very much the same thought process with Madame Chiang six years ago and she surprised us. Whether the same will happen again I don't know, but Oriental Mystique is not unsimilar to her, although she's probably more attractive than her dam. However she might just want better ground than she did."

Bloodstock expert Tom Peacock with three newcomers to look out for:

A little pragmatism must be applied when judging the merit of backend maidens on soft ground, but there are few more opportune moments to refresh your Racing Post Horse Tracker with projects for next season than two-year-old day at Newmarket, where a number of immaculately-bred youngsters will be making their racecourse debut, including this trio:

Al Zaraqaan (1.55)
That Shadwell chose Golden Horn for a meeting with Asheerah was quite an accolade as she has already been responsible for one of its most important recent products in Awtaad, winner of the 2016 Irish 2,000 Guineas. The mare also has black type from two of her progeny through Listed-placed Aneen and Alghabrah, who was third in last year's Leopardstown's 1,000 Guineas Trial in a shortlived career.

Angelic Time (2.30)
It cost Phoenix Thoroughbreds 500,000gns to secure this colt from Tattersalls Book 1 last year and for good reason; he comes from a family rich in early speed. Angelic Time’s brother is Estidhkaar, who took the Champagne and Superlative Stakes as a juvenile, while he is a half-brother to European champion two-year-old Toormore.

Almighwar (4.45)
Hamdan Al Maktoum was always likely to maintain a tradition with offspring of his King George and Oaks-winning mare Taghrooda and her first to hit the track is in the care of her former trainer John Gosden. As a son of Dubawi with middle-distance prospects, Almighwar starts off over a mile, but he faces stiff competition against the likes of Nevendon (half-brother to Prix Morny winner Pretty Pollyanna) and Oriental Mystique (first foal of Group 1 heroine Madame Chiang).
