Mick Winters has Christmas wish to make Sayce Gold a Grade 2 winner at Limerick
Mick Winters wants to pay tribute to the late Trevor Hemmings by producing the legendary owner's Sayce Gold to win the Grade 2 BoyleSports Irish EBF Dawn Run Mares Novice Chase (1.30) at Limerick on Tuesday.
Sayce Gold was no match for Concertista at Cork three weeks ago and appears to have her work cut out to turn the tables on Willie Mullins' mare, but Winters is quietly confident of landing a Christmas upset.
The trainer said: "Concertista is favourite and probably deserves to be. But she'll need to prove she jumps well. The same could be said for our mare but she improved a lot from her first start to her second this season and hopefully she can improve again."
Winters added: "The ground will be in our favour and it would be great if we could get a little bit of black type. That would be mighty. It would be really special to win this race and acknowledge everything Trevor Hemmings has done for the local community here and the wider racing industry. He was a great man and he is sadly missed. I'd love to win a race for his family over Christmas and we'll be doing our best."
The Tim Duggan Memorial Handicap Chase (2.40) is the feature race at Limerick and Philip Dempsey will be bidding to bag the 2m3½f contest for the second year in a row. Dempsey sent out The Long Mile to win 12 months ago for JP McManus and the same connections are back again with Ten Ten.
Dempsey said: "We've been waiting for the ground with him and he's in good form. Only time will tell if he's fit enough for this on his first start since May but we're happy with him. The only time he encountered real deep ground was in the Thyestes and he didn't handle it, but that race was a bit of a war of attrition. We're hopeful he'll handle this and, if he does, he has a small chance."
McManus is also represented by Glenloe, whose trainer Gordon Elliott has a leading chance with Defi Bleu.
Elliott said: "Defi Bleu will love the ground. He has solid course form, which counts for a lot around Limerick. Glenloe is in good form but has to step up on his comeback run."
