Latest ground and betting updates on a day with something of a seaside theme

Yarmouth racecourse: racing there today with big names in attendance
Yarmouth racecourse: racing takes place there with big names in attendanceCredit: Edward Whitaker

Something of a seaside special afternoon with Yarmouth and Brighton in action and attracting the top players with Frankie Dettori, Jamie Spencer, champion Silvestre de Sousa, Gerald Mosse and Tom Queally among the jockeys at the east coast venue.

John Gosden bestrides both meetings, tempting Dettori for just one ride at Yarmouth on the much-tipped Derby entry Corelli while sending Rab Havlin to Brighton for the Newmarket trainer's only runner there Precious Ramotswe, who carries Cracksman's colours being owned by Anthony Oppenheimer.

Nottingham, spared an arranged inspection yesterday with improved weather, completes the afternoon action before three more meetings in the evening with two on the all-weather, at Newcastle and Kempton, plus Ballinrobe over jumps in Ireland.

Final thought

Complete the sequence. 2012, 2015 and ....? Yes 2018 is due to be the third title-winning year for trainer John Gosden. After Cracksman's Ganay show and Enable to come along with a host of lower Group-race performers surely the pricing is wrong of 11-4 compared to 2-7 for Aidan O'Brien, whose grip on the Classics does not look anywhere near as tight this year with Godolphin's reawakening. Yes the Derby can be pivotal but Gosden didn't need it in 2012 to triumph.
