It was an arresting moment last week when Nicky Henderson announced "without doubt" that Minella Indo was the one to beat in the King George VI Chase.

The reflex reaction – but he's a Gold Cup winner! – clashed pretty spectacularly with the thought that immediately followed: yes, he is the Gold Cup winner. This was only personal experience, but it struck as a telling illustration of how punters have been conditioned to treat Britain's two premier staying chases as totally contrasting tests of a racehorse.
