The staying division cannot seem to please people. Its greatest asset, the jumps-like tendency for longevity among the big players, is often used against it rhetorically. The charge that its protagonists are all failed middle-distance horses is on the verge of being tautological: who is trying to breed smart stayers these days?

The appearance that the staying division has room for only one big star at a time is another supposed drawback, but it would be argued that the deja vu of repeated results is to a large extent an inalienable part of races over longer distances.
