When the popular Wicklow Brave famously won the Irish St Leger in 2017, there were only four runners and the favourite Order Of St George was sent off 1-7 – understandably so given he had 10lb in hand. This year's race is the polar opposite with 14 runners and eight of them rated within 7lb of each other.
It is certainly not the classiest running of the Classic, but it looks one of the most competitive. Melbourne Cup hero Twilight Payment is top-rated on a mark of 117. With newer stricter protocols in place for the Spring Carnival in Melbourne this year, it looks as though Joseph O'Brien has trained the evergreen eight-year-old a bit differently and this, you sense, has been his ultimate aim.
