'He looks the horse they all have to beat' - get the Supreme Stakes lowdown

Sunday: 3.35 Goodwood
Weatherbys Stallion Book Supreme Stakes (Group 3) | 7f | 3yo + | ITV/RTV

Previous runnings of the Supreme Stakes may be crucial to finding the winner of this year's race, with last year's second Double Or Bubble and 2020 winner Happy Power the clear choices in the betting.

Double Or Bubble brings standout top-level form to the table, having been a solid fifth behind Alcohol Free in the July Cup at Newmarket last month after striking at this level in the Abernant Stakes earlier in the season.

However, her rating of 109 puts her 1lb shy behind the top-rated Happy Power, who possesses fine course form and thrives around the turns and undulations of the Sussex track.

A narrow winner of the race two years ago, the six-year-old has also performed well in the last two runnings of the Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and only lost third in that Group 2 in the final 100 yards last month.

Given he's stepping down in class, if he runs to that level again he could be hard to beat.

Ever Given and Misty Grey do not have much to find on ratings against their chief rivals, but head into the race off the back of disappointing efforts.

The Hugo Palmer-trained Ever Given was comfortably held behind Happy Power when sixth in the Lennox and even his best form requires another step up, while Misty Grey was last in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon last time.

Wall hoping Bubble won't burst yet

Darley July Cup fifth Double Or Bubble could set up some ambitious top-level targets for the autumn as she attempts to go one better in the Supreme Stakes than she did a year ago.

The Chris Wall-trained five-year-old was beaten only three and three-quarter lengths behind Alcohol Free in the sprinting showpiece on her latest start, having also won the Group 3 Abernant Stakes at Newmarket.

Double Or Bubble finished second to Toro Strike in this race 12 months ago, but Wall hopes she can avenge that defeat and set up some big-race targets, although a trip to Japan for the Sprinters Stakes now looks unlikely.

"She ran really well at Newmarket and was just nabbed for fourth. She would've finished a lot closer still had she not been drawn where she was," Wall said.

"We've been forced to go back to seven furlongs as there are a lack of six-furlong opportunities for a filly like her at the moment, but she was second in this race last year. It's highly unlikely she'll go to Japan, but there may be options in America for her."

Goodwood was hit by a deluge of rain earlier in the week and the Newmarket trainer hopes the ground will continue to dry out to give his stable star the best chance possible.

Wall added: "She's very well and we're keen to run as it looks a good spot for her. We could have done without the rain they had earlier in the week, which I didn't think we'd be saying!

"We'll keep an eye on underfoot conditions and I'll walk the course on raceday when I get down there, as she's a filly who may not be as good on softer ground."

What they say

Alastair Donald, racing manager to King Power Racing, owners of Happy Power
He loves Goodwood as he's won this race before and ran extremely well in the Lennox Stakes last time. That's the second time he's run really well in that race and looked like winning it. The slight bit of ease in the ground will be in his favour and he looks the horse they all have to beat.

Tom Dascombe, trainer of Misty Grey
He's in absolutely tip-top form. Ripon was the wrong race for him over the wrong trip. Apart from that he's been running really well this season and this trip should be perfect. We want to be aiming high with him and he won a handicap off 106 two starts ago. To win a race like that off that mark definitely shows you have to be a Group horse in the making.

Ed Walker, trainer of Sunset Bay
I made a speculative entry for her earlier in the week and she ran well in the Dick Hern Stakes at Haydock earlier this month. She could nick some black-type prize-money as the race has cut up.
