Graeme Rodway believes Oxted form could prove pivotal in the Summer Stakes
3.05 York
William Hill Summer Fillies' Stakes (Group 3) | 6f | 3yo+ | ITV4/RTV
If you were asked to name the best sprinter in Britain then Battaash would be high on the list, but Oxted wouldn’t be far behind.
Oxted clocked a time just 0.28 seconds outside the track record when bolting up in the July Cup last week and might be capable of even better given time.
With that in mind there is one piece of form which stands out in this Group 3 and that is Breathtaking Look’s second behind Oxted in the Abernant Stakes at Newmarket last month.
Breathtaking Look was no match for the winner that day, but she was beaten only a length and the front two were in a different league to the rest of that field. They pulled three and three-quarter lengths clear of third-placed Emaraaty Ana and Brando was back in fifth. He franked the form when a good second in the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle on his next start.
It’s not hard to put a line through Breathtaking Look’s disappointing run at Royal Ascot last time when she was outclassed in the Diamond Jubilee. That was a Group 1 against the males and this Group 3 race confined to fillies should provide a significantly easier assignment.
Frankel fans will be keeping a close eye on Jovial. The daughter of Dubawi is out of Joyeuse, who is a half-sister to the great one, and Jovial has shown plenty of ability herself.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained filly travelled sweetly when upped to 7f at Haydock last time and looked set to win when going to the front inside the final furlong, but she was headed in the dying strides after touching a low of 1.64 in running on Betfair. She didn’t appear to stay.
Her form figures over 6f before that read 3111 and the return to this shorter trip should suit.
Miss Celestial is the other leading contender for red-hot trainer Sir Mark Prescott, but she has the opposite profile to Jovial in that her best form has come over 7f and the drop to 6f on a sharp track like York may not be ideal. She will need speed to hold a position in this big field.
Race analysis by Graeme Rodway
What They Say
Stuart Williams, trainer of Breathtaking Look
She ran a great comeback to be second to subsequent July Cup winner Oxted at Newmarket but then ran no race at Royal Ascot. If she returns to her old form she would have a good chance and she has no penalty to carry.
Richard Hannon, trainer of Canton Queen and Dark Lady
This looks the right spot for both fillies and hopefully they can pick up some black type in a competitive race.
Adam Ryan, assistant to Kevin Ryan, trainer of Last Empire and Queen Jo Jo
Queen Jo Jo was a good second at Haydock but then didn't fire in Ireland last time. She's come out of that race well and will appreciate any rain that falls. Last Empire had no luck in running at Haydock last time, she's an improving filly and will also enjoy any rain they get.
Martyn Meade, trainer of Lyzbeth
She's a filly who everything has to drop right for and she should enjoy this straight track. This looks the logical next step after Goodwood although it's competitive.
Eric Alston, trainer of Maid In India
Martin Harley got off her at Sandown and said she didn't handle the track so hopefully she can bounce back. She has a decent draw in stall two and I always like low numbers at York.
Sir Mark Prescott, trainer of Miss Celestial
She's in foal to Nathaniel and can only run until July 28 so this could be her last race although there is another one in Ireland. She won well at Chelmsford and is back in trip but I'm not sure about her draw in stall one.
James Tate, trainer of Shimmering Dawn
It's a tough race but we've stuck the cheekpieces on her and are hoping for some black type.
Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to Khalid Abdullah, owner of Jovial
She's out to go one better than her mother Joyeuse who was second in the same race. She was just run out of it at Haydock and is back in trip but she's not short of pace.
John Quinn, trainer of Keep Busy
She ran a great race at Royal Ascot and the ground is easing at York which will suit her. We're hopeful of a good showing.
