Goshen continues prep for Elite Hurdle with Flat spin at Goodwood

Gary Moore may still have plenty of regrets about Goshen's final flight fall with the JCB Triumph Hurdle at his mercy but, in terms of matters under the trainer's control, the manner of Goshen's defeat on the Flat at Haydock last month left Moore kicking himself.

The trainer regrets travelling Goshen such a long distance when he was undercooked, and has now found a local target at Goodwood (4.25) to continue his preparations before a return to hurdling.

"This is another sharpener with a view to the Elite Hurdle at Wincanton, which is the race I’m now looking at," said Moore, who had originally pinpointed Cheltenham's Showcase Meeting as a potential jumping off point for the winter.

"That's the reason for running over a mile and a half, as he will need to be quick around Wincanton. I hope he's fit enough for this after his first run back, but I wouldn't be surprised if he still needs it as he's still a bit gross."

The Queen's Natural History made a winning return to action at Chester last month after 734 days off the track and might provide Goshen with the most to do.

De Rasher Counter starts back over hurdles

A defence of the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury is the main priority for Emma Lavelle with 2019 hero De Rasher Counter, who went on to finish third in the Cotswold Chase on festival trials day before rounding off his season when finishing down the field in the Midlands National.

"I'm really pleased with how he's done over the summer," said Lavelle. "He's a horse that likes nice going – ideally good to soft – and obviously after he won the Ladbrokes Trophy last year the ground went very deep, while it was a big effort to win a race like that.

"He looks really well and, while the Ladbrokes Trophy is his main target again, I think I've got him a bit straighter than for his comeback run last year."
