Going news, market moves and non-runners on a stellar Saturday

From dirt devils to dyed-in-the-wool jumpers, racing's broad church is catered to on Saturday like on no other day of the year.

Bonfire night eve promises fireworks on both sides of the Atlantic with the jumps season cranking up to virtually top gear, while day two of the Breeders' Cup - a feast for any Flat fan - takes place at Del Mar.

Initial attention will be focused on Wetherby, which stages the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase - the track's annual highlight that is well up to scratch.

Cue Card, perhaps the most popular jumper in training, tackles another storied sort in Coneygree, but the opposition makes this no two-horse race.

That's the main dish of Wetherby's card, which shares ITV coverage with Ascot, where the feature is the £100,000 Grade 3 Sodexo Gold Cup Handicap Chase.

Newmarket signs off for 2017, while there are also afternoon meetings in Britain and Ireland at Ayr and Down Royal - where Our Duke puts his Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup credentials to the test - with Newcastle's all-weather card starting at 3.25, leading nicely into the Breeders' Cup.

The first race of the US jamboree is at 7.00pm UK time with the Classic due off at 12.35am on Sunday morning - you might need a pot of coffee.

But expect the Brits to be toasting something bubblier if they manage to bag a big one Stateside.

Final thought

It is kind of one of those days when it might not be best to move from the sofa, so shun the Saturday shop and any DIY - and don't feel guilty about it.
