Farewell to a Goodwood institution plus all the latest from the tracks

It is six days until the official end of the Flat season with British Champions Day at Ascot next Saturday, but first the curtain comes down today at Goodwood’s final meeting of the year.

Clerk of the course Seamus Buckley oversees his final meeting, after 23 years of tending what is acknowledged to be a course which consistently produces good ground even in the driest of summers.

Jump jockeys, who seem to love a challenge, start the day with their annual whizz round Goodwood's gradients and standing dish Harry Hunt is back to try and win the race for a second time in four years after a short-head defeat last year.

Day two of Chepstow's jumps meeting does not have the stars of Saturday but it gives the veteran chasers a chance to hog the limelight.

Over in Ireland Naas hosts the latest round in the duel between Colin Keane and Pat Smullen for the Irish Flat jockeys' title.
