Defoe ready to step in for Varian if the main fancies falter in King George
To deliver a career-best in a Group 1 is a big ask, but given how Defoe has already managed to elevate his form this season it is not beyond the realms of possibility.
Whether those efforts could lead to a second top-level success of the campaign is another question, but the five-year-old has come into his own this year.
On his last two outings Defoe has secured a first Group 1 victory in the Coronation Cup as well as landing the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Described this week as a “cool character” by Roger Varian, Defoe has the right mental constitution for the big occasion and his trainer is hopeful of another solid performance.
“He’s in great form and any rain that might come between now and the race would help him a little bit, but he’s pretty versatile with regards to ground,” Varian said.
Defoe’s nine wins have been achieved on good ground or slower, so any showers of substance that fall at the track before proceedings could be beneficial.
Varian thinks his gelding is a solid proposition but is realistic about his chances of success. He said: “He’s got a nice draw and generally comes into things late. That could suit in the way the race is run. It’s a huge ask and a very strong renewal. We’re excited to be involved but I think he’s going to need a career-best.
“I’m sure he’ll be right there hopefully taking advantage of any chinks in the top two or three’s armoury.”
Pros Rarely runs a bad race, has improved at the age of five and taken form to a new level this season.
Cons Despite this season's improvement will likely need to eke out some more progress and ground could be a shade lively for him.
