Can three-time winner Caspian Prince rule supreme in the Dash?

He may be a prince but in the Epsom Dash he rules supreme.

Caspian Prince became the first horse to win the World Pool "Dash" Handicap three times in 2017 and on Saturday, he will have his seventh run in the race – had it not been cancelled during the coronavirus pandemic last season, he would be contesting it for an eighth time.

Should he be victorious again, it would be for his fourth trainer and jockey combination and there is plenty of reason to think he might be, even aged 12. He is not the only veteran to feature this season as he is joined in the line-up by the 2013 winner Duke Of Firenze and Pettochside, who has won twice in four starts this year.

Trainer Mick Appleby said: "He seems as good as ever. He broke the course record at Yarmouth last year so he's still got plenty of speed. I hope there's not too much rain as he's suited by quicker ground."

Being by Arc winner Dylan Thomas, Caspian Prince was not bred for the fastest five furlongs in the world but it has been a perfect fit.

"It's a fast five furlongs and all downhill, which suits him as he's all speed," added Appleby. "He's won over six furlongs but he has so much early pace and the track plays to his strengths as he can get away from them down the hill. A lot of speed horses don't like going downhill as it unbalances them but he's brilliant at it."

On Caspian Prince's chances, Appleby added: "He doesn't have the best draw in stall four. He had a low draw in 2018 when he didn't run that well. Hopefully he can break quickly and get across."
