An old bookmaker trick, which they may try on us at half five on Saturday, is to chalk up the still-puffing Grand National hero as favourite for next year's race, even though long experience has taught us that repeat success in the Aintree spectacular is rare, one notable recent example notwithstanding.

In most races we find the presence of a previous winner to be interesting, even alluring, which explains the prominence in the betting of Clan Des Obeaux and Kemboy for the Betway Bowl, the centrepiece contest today as racing's eyes turn towards Liverpool.

Recent form is hardly shoving punters towards this pair of ten-year-olds, who have one win from seven starts between them this season.
