Can Call My Bluff build on his promising Chester reappearance?

Dominic Ffrench Davis has stumbled on a gem with Call My Bluff, who is one of the stars of his Lambourn stable.

Call My Bluff has won five of his 15 starts, including once over course and distance and he was successful twice from four outings last season, improving to a career-high RPR of 91.

Despite being a five-year-old, Call My Bluff is still quite lightly raced and he hinted he could take his form to an even higher level when a promising third on his seasonal reappearance at Chester last month. That was a superb effort in a hot race, especially as he probably needed it.

Before that run, Call My Bluff had recorded first-time-out form figures of 5576 and the fact he was able to equal his career-best RPR of 91 after 272 days off bodes well for the future.

Ffrench Davis has booked Silvestre de Sousa to replace John Egan in the saddle and Call My Bluff is unbeaten in three starts for the Brazilian. Everything looks right for another big run.

Tom Marquand is another interesting jockey booking for Hughie Morrison on Vino Victrix. Marquand is 11-57 for the stable in the last five years and another ten were in the first three.

Vino Victrix likes this track. His two highest RPRs have come at Kempton and that includes his last victory over course and distance in August last year when he beat Al Kout, who also runs here. Al Kout is 8lb better off for a length-and-a-half defeat, so should reverse placings.

What they say

Marco Botti, trainer of Mollwood
He disappointed last time at Newmarket where he kept stumbling and we found he had lost a shoe after the race. He’s back on the all-weather at a track where he has won before. He has topweight but he has an each-way chance.

Charlie Longsdon, trainer of Moon King
He’s there for a change of scenery really but he’s down the handicap and is not without a chance. He’ll like the trip and goes there in good shape.

Dominic French Davis, trainer of Call My Bluff
We’re only running here by default as he needs to get his toe in ideally on the turf but there isn’t any soft ground around. He won at Kempton as a three-year-old but I think he’s improved since then and I was delighted with his comeback third at Chester. Hopefully down the line we have some nice races like the staying handicap at Goodwood, the Shergar Cup and the Cesarewitch in mind for him.

Hughie Morrison, trainer of Vino Victrix
He’s won at the track before so that will be no issue and we are hoping the step back to two miles will suit. He doesn’t always turn up but if he does he should be bang there.

Stuart Edmunds, trainer of Red Royalist
He’s a grand old boy and we are going back on the Flat as he’s not long had a wind op and they said he was making a noise over jumps. He’s fairly exposed and we are going there more in hope than confidence.
