Burke back and on the hunt for horses to take him to the big time

Keiran Burke is back. The trainer, who burst on to the scene in 2011 when retiring from riding to take over Pat Rodford's licence, won seven races in eight starts with Hunt Ball, who progressed from a mark of 69 to winning at the Cheltenham Festival.

Three seasons later he was gone, stepping back from the front line and assisting Robert Walford.

Burke has learned plenty about the business side of things and has a new yard with good facilities as he bids to start again from scratch, his return getting off the ground at Exeter on Tuesday with two runners.

Burke laughs as he self-deprecatingly suggests he will stop believing his success with the likes of Hunt Ball, Sparky May, Fortification and Holmwood Legend was "more luck than judgement" if and when he does it again.

"It was nice to have a break. Things didn't work out when we did it before," he said. "I'm hoping we've got it all right now, we've got a new yard with everything set up the way we want in, so it's exciting really."

Looking forward he adds: "We haven't got horses of that calibre just yet, we're starting from scratch and hope to do the best with what we've got – hopefully that'll bring some new ones in.

"We've got three or four to go on through the summer and a few youngsters in for next season. We've got a few to go and buy through the summer as well, so hopefully we can build it all back up.

"It's just trying to find decent horses for the money we've got to spend."

On his two runners at Exeter, Jully Les Buxy (2.35) and Isis Blue (4.20pm), he added: "I'd say Jully Les Buxy probably has the better chance of the two. She's in good form and I'm hoping for a big run."
