Best expecting better show on the snow from Berrahri
John Best is hoping Berrahri can continue his excellent record on the snow by securing a fourth success at St Moritz in the Grand Prix Longines (12.30).
The iconic Swiss racecourse sees rivals race through the wintry conditions, and this 1m1f contest is the final preparation for next week’s big event at the track, the Grosser Preis von St Moritz.
Berrahri won this conditions event by seven lengths last season before finishing a length second in the highlight of the meeting.
On his return to Switzerland last week he was third beaten more than 30 lengths in a race won by the Paul Webber-trained New Agenda.
Best said: “We had a lot of snow a day before last week’s race so the ground was very testing, but conditions should be completely different this week.
“That was a difficult race to assess due to the conditions. He could have run much better but I still think he ran very well.
"We’re shouldering a high weight because it’s a conditions race based on prize-money won, and he won a lot of prize-money out here last year.
“I really don’t know why he does so well here but he just loves it. I hope he runs well and then we can go on to the big one next week.”
He added of the experience at St Moritz: “It’s an amazing place where you race on snow on top of a frozen lake.
“We’ve had runners in Dubai, America, Sweden and all over the place, but this is so different. If you’re into racing it’s certainly something to try.”
