Ireland are well ahead on staging big-race Sundays, but throw in today's offering at Cheltenham and we are probably looking at the strongest Sunday of the year across the Irish Sea.

There is a Champion Chase replay, in which the runner-up is odds-on, an ultra-competitive handicap hurdle with the horse favourite for the Supreme at this time last year running off 137 and perhaps the best three-runner novice chase we might see this season.

Speaking on Sunday morning, Cheltenham clerk of the course Simon Claisse said: "The going is still soft, heavy in places and we've moved the rail out to provide the freshest possible ground.

"It has been dry overnight and there hasn't been any frost. The forecast is dry and we may well see some sunny spells this afternoon."

In Ireland, the mighty Faugheen makes the return to the track that looked in doubt at one stage in the Morgiana Hurdle, which is supported by a couple of Grade 2 novice chases.

Throw in the Southern National at Fontwell and some high-level handicap action at Cork and this is one Sunday where you definitely won't find yourself at a loose end.

Final thought

Yesterday's BetVictor Gold Cup winner Splash Of Ginge is becoming National Hunt's version of Angel Cabrera or Stan Wawrinka, players famed for turning up predominantly on the biggest days. Of his six wins, three have been at Grade 3 level and he has never been rated higher than 153 by the BHA.
